Max is Pro with the usage ceiling raised, sold in two multiples.
| Tier | Usage relative to Pro |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | 5x |
| Max 20x | 20x |
From $100/month. Both tiers also add higher output limits, early access to new features, and priority traffic access.
Same products, more room
Max does not unlock anything Pro does not have. Everything — Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, Projects, Research — is already there at Pro. You are buying capacity.
That makes the decision unusually clean: if you are not hitting limits, Max is not for you yet. Pro vs Max goes through the signals.
Max vs the API
For heavy Claude Code use, Max is usually the better deal than metered API billing, because subscription usage is not per-token. For programmatic workloads — a service calling Claude — you need the API regardless of how much Max you have; the two are separate systems and do not share limits.
What this page does not claim
The absolute usage limits underlying “5x” and “20x” are not published as numbers. Everything here is relative, as the source is.
