Claude Science

A desktop research workbench that runs scientific analyses, searches 60+ databases and traces every step from data wrangling to publication.

Last verified August 21, 2026 · 3 sources

Claude Science is a desktop application, not a model. It uses whatever Claude models your plan already includes; what is new is everything around them — scientific tooling, database connections and compute integration.

Anthropic’s framing: “Your research partner for rigorous science.”

What it does

  • Runs analyses across genomics, single-cell, proteomics, structural biology and cheminformatics, each with its own managed compute environment
  • Searches 60+ scientific databases
  • Visualises natively — proteins, structures, molecules, alignments, genomic tracks
  • Keeps provenance on every result, so a figure traces back to the code and conversation that produced it
  • Checks its own work in the background: citation checking and figure validation
  • Manages compute across laptops, clusters and GPUs
  • Drafts the manuscript alongside the analysis

Reproducibility is the design centre. An analysis you cannot trace is not a result.

Availability is narrower than the other products

  • Beta.
  • macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux only — no Windows build.
  • Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise an administrator must enable it first, which is a real blocker if you are a researcher on an institutional plan.

Anthropic also offers discounted Team seats for active labs at academic institutions and nonprofits.

What it is not

  • Not Cowork. Cowork produces business deliverables from your files; Science runs computation against scientific data with provenance tracking.
  • Not a model. Nothing here is exclusive to a Claude Science model, because there isn’t one.
  • Not generally available. Beta means the feature set and availability can change without the notice a GA product would get.

The AI for Science program provides API credits to researchers — a grant scheme, not a product. Its most recent round offered up to $30,000 in credits to as many as 50 projects, with applications closing 15 July 2026.

Plan availability

Anything left blank is not documented publicly, not a claim that it is unavailable. Compare every feature at once in the availability matrix.
